5 Secrets You Must Discover before You Die

Image
Recently I chance upon this book The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die By John Izzo which I personally find very empowering. It helps me to reflect upon myself than did I live the 5 secrets. What are the secrets to happiness and meaning? Why do some people find a deep sense of purpose while they are here and die with few regrets while others end their lives bitter and disappointed? About two years ago I set out to answer that question by asking several thousand people to identify the one person they knew who had lived a long life and found true happiness. It seemed to me that each of us knows at least one person who achieved true success. After receiving over 1,000 nominations, I interviewed 235 people from the age of 59-106 (who had over 18,000 years of life experience) asking them to reflect back on their lives: What brought happiness? What gave meaning? What did they regret? What did they wish they had learned sooner? What did not matter in the end? These “wise elders” w...

Happiness Is in the Mind-By Paramhansa Yogananda

Image
Happiness Is in the Mind October 11th, 2008 • By Paramhansa Yogananda Paramhansa YoganandaThis article is a continuation of a series Paramhansa Yogananda wrote during the depression about “Creating Your Happiness.” Happiness is a will-o’-the-wisp which most people follow, and which oftentimes leads them astray until they drown in the marshes of suffering. Most temporary, easily attained, so-called happiness is nothing but suffering in disguise. It may be pleasant to the palate to eat a great deal at the table, but remember that such procedure is very likely to have many unpleasant after-effects, such as acute indigestion or stomach ache, so also is it with immoderation in your natural impulses. They generally give you sense pleasure in the beginning, but ultimately they produce satiety and unhappiness. The greatest way to create happiness for yourself is not to allow sense lures or bad habits to control you, but rather be a stern, iron-like ruler of your habits and appetites. Remembe...

Creating Your Happiness – Paramhansa Yogananda September 22nd, 2008 • By Paramhansa Yogananda Today we introduce a new feature on the Atma Jyoti Blog: writings by Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi. Most of these early writings are taken from the East-West and Inner Culture magazines. This article is the first of several on “Creating Your Happiness.” Paramhansa Yogananda(The following was written during the Great Depression, but its principles remain relevant today.) It is easier to spend than to earn. Also it is harder to save than to earn. Most people spend thirty dollars a week when their income is only twenty. The extra ten dollars is acquired by borrowing, or by buying with promises to pay in the future, on installment plans, and such systems. You must not always feel that you have to “keep up with the Joneses.” To try to own more than your purse will allow is to live in constant mental worry, and under such conditions happiness...

Spiritual Quote: Saints

"Great men and saints always live several hundred years ahead of their time and exemplify the universal Truth of all times. Therefore, the art of right living can be found in the study of the best in all nationalities, plus the study of the individual lives of great saints". Shri Shri Paramahansa Yogananda (Author of spiritual classic "Autobiography of a Yogi") East-West, May 1933, page 3

Quote: Illness /Pain

To my surprise I saw that most of us had selected the illnesses we would suffer, and for some, the illness that would end our lives. Sometimes healing does not come immediately, or at all, because of our need for growth. All experience is for our good, and sometimes it takes what we would consider negative experience to help develop our spirits. We were very willing, even anxious, as spirits to accept all of our ailments, illnesses, and accidents here to help better ourselves spiritually. I understood that the pain we experience on earth is just a moment, just a split second of consciousness in the spirit world, and we are very willing to endure it. (Betty Eadie,In the Book `Embraced By the Light')
