Common Food Myths

Chocolate, tea and cola beverages can be lethal

Chocolate contains theobromine, also called xantheose, a stimulant. This stimulant will only harm us human beings when we eat/drink too much of it, but a certain smaller amount of chocolate, tea and cola beverages are poisonous to animals, especially to cats, dogs, horses, parrots and voles.
For the appetite of the ones who have been eating recently or are still eating: do not read the following few sentences.
The first signs of theobromine poisoning are:
vomiting,
diarrhea,
an increase in urination

Do not blame the turkey for falling asleep during the Thanksgiving Dinner

An amino acid called tryptophan helps the body produce the B-vitamin "niacin". Niacin (probably better known as nicotinic acid and vitamin B3 ) helps the body produce serotonin. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter, has a role in the human mood and state of mind, and a role in consciousness. This is a chemical that acts as a calming agent in the brain and plays a key role in sleep. We rather not use tryptophan supplements though, because in 1989 it was a cause of the Eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS), a syndrome that can cause permanent disability and even death.
Anyways, the production of serotonin (with help of the turkey) works best on an empty stomach. But I don't think you will start the day with eating turkey, besides only a little tryptophan will make it to the brain.

Use coffee to persuade anyone

Researchers in Australia said if you want to persuade anyone to agree with your line of thinking, serving coffee to that person may help. "Caffeine increases persuasion through instigating systematic processing of the message." Furthermore, caffeine can help to put a person in a good mood.

Which chopping board is more hygienic: a wooden one or a plastic one?

Some manufacturers of plastic chopping boards would give the answer: "It's the plastic one". Sorry to say this, but most likely there is no difference at all, where hygiene is concerned. Besides, some biologists believe that wooden boards are actually better!

Ice Cream Is Chinese Food

It was the Chinese who invented the principle of the ice cream as we know it nowadays. The Chinese added some sugar to the ice and sold it as cool food in the summer. After this more varieties of liquids appeared, and I am glad they came on this strange idea of freezing milk as well.

Fat free ≠ calorie free

My advice is to read the food labels to see whether it is true. Fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories. But for most of the other products: fat free does not say much about the amount of calories!

Exercise is not always a reason to eat more

Research has shown that after twenty minutes of exercise, people ate no more than those who had done nothing at all. The only difference was that those who had exercised enjoyed eating more; they thought the food tasted better. But of course, when you exercise a lot more, you will eat more, because you have to get your energy from somewhere.

Lemons contain more sugar than strawberries

So do not say that lemons are sourer than strawberries because they comparatively contain less sugar. Besides this, lemons comparatively contain less vitamin C than strawberries. Even though it contains less vitamin C, lemons are highly valuated because of their beneficial substances and/or their antimicrobic and antiseptic properties.

How many rows does an ear of corn have?

It is always an even number, unless it's developmental growth is disrupted by something. It is an even number because the rows always occur in pairs (because of a split of the first kernel initials). I found out that the number of rows can vary between 8 and 18, but the most common number of rows is 16. And an ear of corn with 8 rows is quite rare.

The microwave does not kill any vitamins

When heating something up in the microwave, the product is heated starting from the inside. Just a little moist is lost during the heating, so no vitamins are lost in the cooking water. By the way, the radiation a microwave uses has nothing to do with radioactive radiation; it uses an electromagnetic radiation.
